Report: PM Mulls "Quiet" Support for Shalom Presidency

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu is considering lending what is being described as "quiet" support to the candidacy of Minister Silvan Shalom to succeed Shim'on Peres as president, according to a Sunday report by the Haaretz news service.

A senior Likud source said the move could be worth the vote of 11 Knesset members from the Yisrael Beytenu faction who have said that they will vote as instructed by Netanyahu but beyond that Shalom does not need any help. The source said the prime minister is debating whether to declare his support for Shalom. There are those who say such a declaration could hurt Shalom, who has not yet officially declared if he will run.
