Chief of Staff Benny Gantz of the Israel Defense Forces stressed the central place of the Israel Defense Forces in society and the public support it enjoys in his remarks for Remembrance Day for fallen soldiers, pre-state fighters and victims of terror. Addressing bereaved families at the Western Wall of the Temple in Jerusalem, he said their loved ones had passed their mission on to the current generation of soldiers.
Gantz said, "Citizens of Israel, we know that the relatively calm security situation we have experienced in recent years is a deceptive illusion that only needs the power of a spark to set things on fire. Here this evening, we will ensure that we stand alert and ready to respond to any flareup, and we will perform any task which is required for the security of Israel. It's a high and binding command, that we demand of our forces. We cannot guarantee the safe return of all our troops. We highly resolve to send them into battle trained, equipped with the best resources, led by the best commanders. Yet this is not enough."
