2 Approved to Run Against Assad

The Syrian central election committee approved, Sunday, a former minister and a moderate opposition member of parliament to run against President Bashar Al-Assad in June. They were the only ones from 24 candidates announced, last week, at the end of the registration period, who met the requirement of support from at least 35 of the 250 members of parliament.

Al-Assad is expected to win another seven-year term. Despite the potential for war crimes, based on his suppression of the opposition, he was not eliminated from consideration "for a criminal past".
