New York Jews Open Israel's 66th Birthday Celebration

Thousands of Jews, including hundreds of children, started the celebration of Israel's 66th birthday, Sunday, at the Jewish community centers in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Different events featured Israeli history, culture and heritage.

The events were the initiative of the New York Jewish Federation and the United Jewish Appeal, which donate about $30 million each year to projects in Israel. One UJA official said the events show how excited the city's Jews are to celebrate Israeli Independence Day and how united they are in their love for the Jewish state.
