Judge Avital Chen of the Jerusalem Magistrates Court on Thursday extended the remand of a couple from the community of Yitzhar, who police claim were involved in the torching of a mosque in Umm al-Fahm and spraying graffiti nearby. The reason given for the arrest of the couple is that they were driving a car similar to the one used by the vandals.
The judge extended the remand of the wife until Friday morning, and the remand of the husband until Sunday. The couple’s lawyer, Itamar Ben Gvir, pointed out during the hearing that the police's reasoning is wrong because the two live in a community where it is customary to lend vehicles on a frequent basis. Therefore, he argued, the presence of the vehicle does not constitute evidence proving the presence of the couple at the scene of the crime.
