The Israel Defense Forces kicked off their Environmental Defense Forces initiatives for 2014 in a ceremony, Thursday evening, at Defense Ministry headquarters in Tel Aviv. Deputy Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkott said "The IDF, as an army of the people, educates and shapes the younger generation of the country and therefore must also take responsibility for the environment. It is our moral obligation, a great responsibility placed on commanders for the success of the mission."
The nine initiatives, in conjunction with the Society for the Protection of Nature, relate to environment and nature preservation in the Mount Hermon, Jordan Valley and Palmachim areas among the geographical regions. They deal with preservation of endangered species of fauna and flora and the IDF's impact on the environment.
