If We Don't Act Quickly, We'll Lose American Jewry

Chairman Oded Ravivi of the local council in the Judean Jewish community of Efrat warned, this week, about the assimilation of Jews in the United States. Returning from a trip to San Francisco and New York with a group of Israeli opinion makers under the San Francisco Jewish Federation's Gevanim (Hues) program, he reported an assimilation rate of 90 percent in San Francisco, noting that Jews went to the city and neglected Jewish education for their children, including Israelis.

Claiming that only 20 percent of American Jewry identifies with any religious stream and 80 percent don't identify as Jews, he used soccer imagery to warn, "As far as we're concerned, it bothers us because we are losing the majority of Jews in our greatest Diaspora. We are now in injury time."
