Gil'ad Schalit Writes to PM on Behalf of Pollard

Gil'ad Schalit, who was abducted by Hamas and its allies in 2006 and held captive for five and a half years, has written a letter to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, asking him to demand the release of Jonathan Pollard in the framework of diplomatic talks, according to a Monday morning report by the Yediot Aharonot daily. Pollard is in the 29th year of a life sentence for passing classified information to Israel from the United States.

In his letter, Schalit noted that Pollard has been been behind bars more than five times as long as he was in captivity and that Israel and the U.S. are allies. Against the backdrop of all the releases Israel has made and is being asked to make of security prisoners, he asked Netanyahu to view Pollard's situation in terms of saving a life, just as he did for Schalit in releasing more than 1,000 security prisoners to obtain his release.
