Campaign Pushes National Service for Yeshiva Students

A new campaign urges yeshiva students to sign up for national service. The army alternative, called Sherut Leumi in Hebrew, is mostly known as a place for religious post-high school women. National Service usually consists of volunteering in hospitals, day care centers or other places of social service.

It is not yet known whether existing volunteer organizations such as Hatzalah, ZAKA, serving as shlichim, running soup kitchens or other activities manned mostly by yeshiva students will one day count toward mandatory National Service as new laws are currently being enacted.
