The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in conjunction with the Ministry of Religious Services has published a brochure of guidelines for the treatment of gardens for the upcoming Shmitta year.
The booklet is designed for home gardens as well as professionals. The Shmitta, or Sabbatical year comes once every seven years. As described in the Torah, it is a Sabbath for the land to rest and many types of gardening, tilling, pruning and discarding are forbidden in the Land of Israel. Shmitta will begin this fall with Rosh Hashanna.
