Conversion Law Advancing Against Jewish Home's Wishes

Chairman David Rotem of the Knesset Constitution, Justice and Law Committee announced, Tuesday, that he intended to proceed with approval of a bill by Elazar Stern to amend Israel's law for converting to Judaism. Knesset Members from the Jewish Home party expressed their opposition, saying they did not support the proposal in its current form, explaining that it was against the coalition agreement and the understanding that the law would be coordinated with the Chief Rabbinate and the Religious Services Office.

Deputy Religious Services Minister Eli Ben-Dahan sent a letter to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu asking him to block the laws progress, but Netanyahu refused. Jewish Home threatened to vote against the coalition until the end of the winter session of the Knesset.
