Knesset Minister Yuval Steinitz (Likud Beytenu) defended the limiting of small parties in a speech to the Knesset on Monday. "The Governance Act is an important law and will serve democracy. Raising the threshold is reasonable and appropriate, and ever after raising it, then it will still be below average," he stated.
He added, "nothing is wrong with that smaller parties uniting. Will it harm the Arab parties to unite? G-d forbid the Ashkenazim of Agudas Israel will be in the same party as the Sephardim of Shas? What's wrong with that? In large Western democracies there are fixed methods to allow the existence of two or three parties. Is it damaging to the quality of American democracy with only two parties? I have no doubt that in ten years, in a historical perspective, even those who attack the law today will welcome it in the future," stated Steinitz.
