A generally-peaceful rally by hundreds of thousands of hareidi Jews against a law that would increase their numbers in the Israel Defense Forces came to an end, early Sunday evening in Jerusalem. The only incidents to mar the gathering were the torching of three dumpsters on Herzl Boulevard near the Highway 1 entrance to the western part of the capital and the burning of tires on the Route 9 entrance to the city.
Organizers said half a million people took part. Authorities in Jewish law ruled that it was appropriate to say a blessing for seeing 600,000 in one spot, corresponding to the number of men of military age who took part in the Exodus from Egypt. The rally ended with the singing of "Ani Maamin" (I believe), based on one of Maimonides 13 articles of faith, which foresees the Messianic Era.
