Chairman Avishai Braverman of the Knesset Economics Committee called on Chairman Dov Litvinoff of the Tamar Regional Council, Thursday, to change the council's policy of giving parking tickets to visitors who park outside the facilities of Dead Sea hotels, including on Shabbat. Braverman said the practice causes anguish to both Israeli and foreign tourists.
The Labor party lawmakers comments came within the context of a committee visit to the area. The committee held a hearing on rehabilitation and development of the area's tourist agency. They were briefed by Litvinoff, Executive Director Amir Halevi of the Tourism Ministry, CEO Udi Zicherman of the Dead Sea Hotel Association and Executive Director Shim'on Daniel of the Government Corporation for Protection of the Dead Sea. Manager No'am Goldstein of the Resource Branch of the Dead Sea Works reported on the harvesting of salts that give the sea its Hebrew name Yam Hamelah, (literally the Sea of Salt).
