Chairman of the Committee for the Rights of the Child, MK Orly Levy Abekasis (Likud-Beytenu), put forth a pre-Purim appeal to young people to refrain from the use of firecrackers and other explosive detonating devices.
"Every year at Purim time we see youngsters and teenagers who are injured by firecrackers," the MK said, addressing youth, parents and police. "I am asking you to stop playing with these things now - they could you cost you your lives, which are precious to your family and friends. Stay with the traditional way we celebrate the holiday, by dressing up and celebrating with your family," she added.
MK Levy Abaekasis then asked police to help by banning the sales, purchase and use of such devices, and reminded all of this past Saturday night when a 14-year-old from the Jerusalem area lost the sight in one eye after playing with firecrackers with his friends, and then which suddenly exploded in his face.
