Court Orders Al-Jazeera to Pay Israeli Photographer

An Israeli court ordered the Qatar-based Al-Jazeera network, Thursday, to pay Israeli photographer Shmuel Rahmani 50,000 shekels in a copyright case involving his photographs from the 1978 Coast Road terror attack, also known as the "Bloody Bus" (Autobus Hadamim in Hebrew) attack by the Fatah organization, in which 35 Israelis were murdered and 71 wounded. The court also tagged Al-Jazeera for NIS 15,000 in attorneys' fees and 1,500 shekels in other legal costs.

Rahman saw his work from the Ma'ariv newspaper in an Al-Jazeera report broadcast on Israel's Channel 10 Television, which did not give him credit and for which he was not paid. The judge also rejected Al-Jazeera's fair and casual-use claims, as well as a defense that the network could not be the object of a suit in Israel.
