Prominent rabbis called for prayer vigils and to lobby against the new government plan to issue criminal charges against conscientious objectors. The criminal charges, if instituted, would be instead of economic sanctions -- seen as less harsh -- against those failing to register for conscription.
The Special Committee for the Equal Sharing of the Burden Bill, has specifically examined male yeshiva students who could previously apply for an exemption under the Tal Law. Other demographic groups that have generally avoided the draft include Arabs, Bedouins, and certain celebrities. Proponents of the sanctions say that all Israeli citizens should be required to serve the state in some form.
