First Reading Approved for Statue of Limitations on National Insurance Debt

The Knesset today (Tuesday) approved the first reading of a bill submitted by MK Amnon Cohen (Shas) which would place a seven-year statute of limitations on the amount of time the National Insurance Institute (Bituach Leumi) could demand payment of back debt.

It was explained that, "We are seeing many instances of where the NII is requesting payment of charges that have been accumulating for years, and which the debtor was not even aware had existed." It has mainly affected young people, who have accumulate debt before their military service for months not worked, causing debt problems long after their release from the military.
