The leftist Meretz (Hebrew for energy) party opened a membership drive on Sunday. The party said the public is fed up with parties that disappoint them quickly after the elections, adding "There's no alternative for real ideology."
Meretz Chairwoman Zahava Gal-On said that right now, "The rabbinical establishment is getting more set," and "Settlements continue to be a top national priority." Playing on the meaning of the party's name, she added , "Especially now, when inequality is reaching new levels, when workers' rights are being trampled and middle class wages are being eroded, now is the especially the time for more Meretz." Gal-On concluded that membership in the party was the best way to influence, change and be involved.
