Former National Soccer Coach Richard Nielsen Dead at 76

Richard "Ricardo" Nielsen, who led Denmark to a surprise victory in the 1992 European nations tournament, passed away, Thursday, after a nine-month bout with a serious illness. Nielsen coached Israel from 2000 to 2002, coming within an overtime of a playoff for a spot in the 2002 World Cup before Austria eliminated Israel.

Calling Nielsen's passing "painful", Chairman Avi Luzon of the Israel Football Association said, "Nielsen was active in promoting Israeli football after the conclusion of his  job as coach of the team, and during his work here, he left his mark with appropriate patterns of behavior and advanced training. Even after he stopped coaching in Israel, he was the best ambassador of Israeli football and the state of Israel."
