Putin Throws in Support to Al-Sisi Bid

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin announced his support today (Thursday) for the presidential bid by Egyptian Army chief Field Marshal Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, adding he hoped this would strengthen Russo-Egyptian ties, according to a report by Reuters.

Russia is looking to take advantage of the somewhat strained relationship between Cairo and Washington, which has withheld a portion of its annual aid to Egypt after Sisi ousted Egypt's first democratically elected president Islamist leader Mohammed Morsi last year.

"I know you have decided to run for president. This is a very responsible decision, to take upon yourself responsibility for the fate of the Egyptian people," Putin told Sisi, “and I wish you luck on my own behalf and that of the Russian people," he said.
