Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu opposes taking criminal actions against those hareidi men who have not enlisted.
"I will not support that a Jew sit in jail because he learns Torah," Prime Minister Netanyahu said in response to a question posed to him by Gershon Mesika, of the Samaria Residents Council. Mesika attended the Likud faction meeting which took place this past Monday in order to hear the Prime Minister's position on the matter.
Shas Chairman MK Aryeh Deri said earlier this week that a man attending Yeshiva who learns Torah all day is fully carrying an "equal burden", the same as any IDF soldier. "Hareidim who are not learning in Yeshiva (Torah academy) all day should certainly serve in the IDF, but a man who sits and learns Torah all day within the Yeshiva is carrying his 'equal burden', Deri told Channel 10 in an interview.
