Israel Makes History: A Bacteria is Born

Iti Amir, a senior employee at the microbiology laboratory in Ma'ayanei Yeshua, has discovered a new bacteria which will be named for him.  "It's a dream come true," he said.

The 34-year-old doctoral student in the Department of Molecular Microbiology and Biotechnology at Tel Aviv University, who has been working at the hospital for about eight years, was working on the blood culture of an 84-year-old man in the Internal Medicine department. Much to his surprise found that cultured bacteria had never never before been identified.

"We discovered that, essentially, we are speaking about a cultured bacterium that did not fit the usual pattern we are familiar with" he said . "We had molecular diagnostic preformed, and realized that we had a new bacteria."
