Shas chairman MK Aryeh Deri said on Tuesday that yeshiva students share in the burden of service as much as any soldier in the IDF.
Speaking to Channel 10 News, Deri said, "A hareidi who does not study in yeshiva should serve in the army, but a yeshiva student shares the burden no less than soldiers do. I believe that whoever studies Torah from morning to night shares the national, cultural and security burden as much as IDF soldiers.”
He added that Israel must allow each student to study Torah as much as he wants. "They do not have to enlist. Yet I say that anyone who does not study Torah should contribute in some form."
