At today's (Monday) meeting of the Knesset Constitution Committee, Arab members, for the first time, agreed for the need to take a look at the Israel Democracy Institute's suggestions for gradually raising the threshold over the next two election cycles.
During the discussion MK Jamal Zahalka (Balad) said, "Within a reconcilable and intelligent framework, I think we should seriously examine the Israel Democracy Insitute's suggestion."
IDI's president, Dr. Arye Carmon, said, "Raising the threshold will strengthen Israeli democracy, and I welcome Yesh Atid's initiative in spearheading this process. At the same time, it is no less important to understand that this step is not being taken to further weaken the minorities."
According to the IDI's proposal, which is part of a series of recommendations submitted by them, the threshold would be raised by 2.5% in the next election, and then raised once again for the subsequent election.
