      Rabbi Against Surrogate Parenthood for Individuals

      Rabbi Menahem Burstein, who heads the Puah Institute for Fertility and Gynecology in Accordance with Halacha (Jewish Law) came out, Thursday, against efforts by Health Minister Yael German to give individuals the opportunity to use a surrogate mother to bring a child into the world. Rabbi Burstein said, "It's a problematic bill comes to solve the plight of the individual, but creates moral and ethical problems which are much worse."

      Referring specifically to the case of single mothers, Rabbi Burstein explained, "When it's about a woman who brings a baby into the world using a foreign donor and... without a father, this is a difficult reality in our eyes and cries out to heaven for the injustice done to that child, that in order to solve the personal distress of his mother (which indeed is not simple), they bring it into the world without a father and without a father figure." He said that when it comes to resorting to surrogacy - it is seven times as difficult , "since the mother who raises the child is 'half a mother'...."
