Afghanistan: First Televised Presidential Debate

Candidates to replace President of Afghanistan Hamid Karzai will be facing each other in the first televised debate of an important election prior to NATO’s planned withdrawal of combat troops, according to a report by the AP.

Due to the fear of violence, security was very high for today’s (Tuesday) debate, which includes five out of the 11 candidates.  Karzai is not eligible to run in the election.

A successful election would demonstrate Afghanistan’s first democratic transfer of power.
