Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein met on Monday with Nobel Prize laureate Prof. Dan Shechtman who recently announced his candidacy for president. "These are important hours for the State of Israel and there is a need to think strategically in order to know where we want to go," Shechtman stated. "I love this country, its landscapes and the people who live in it," he added.
Prof. Shechtman won a Nobel Prize in chemistry in 2011 for his work in discovering quasicrystals.
The President of Israel is an ambassadorial and apolitical role voted for every seven years by the 120 Members of Knesset. President Shimon Peres has chosen not to run for re-election. The next election will be held on June 14, 2014.
