Tunisian Minister of Culture Ousted Due to Israel Visit

Tunisia's new Minister of Culture, Amal Karbul, was forced to resign just hours following her swearing-in ceremony after it was revealed that eight years ago she visited Israel.

The Minister had participated in a UN-sponsored meeting in the Palestinian Authority where both Palestinian Arabs and Israelis attended. Tunisian Prime Minister Mehdi Jemaa attempted to defend Karbul, explaining that she was only in Israel for one day, and that even then she had been harrassed at Ben Gurion Airport by security forces. But outside pressures prevailed and the newly appointed minister was prevailed upon to tender her resignation.
