Syria: Talks Between Assad and Rebels at Impasse

Negotiations between representatives of the Assad government and members of the opposition have reached a dead end.

Sources involved at the ongoing Geneva talks have said that the opposition representatives in the negotiations have rejected the "Declaration of Principles", which were submitted by the Assad government, apparently due to the fact that it did not address the issue of the transfer of power out of Assad's hands.

Bouthaina Shaaban, Assad's closest advisor and main negotiator, said in response that "apparently there are no representatives from the opposition who have the ability to recognize Syria's dignity or care what happens to the Syrian people."
