A-G Promotes Bill to Forcibly End Life-Threatening Prisoner Hunger Strikes

Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein has given the green light on the promotion of a bill that would allow the authorities to forcibly end a prisoner's hunger strike and accept medical treatment against his will if he is perceived as being in a life-threatening condition, according to a report by Israel Radio this morning (Tuesday).

Following a discussion with all concerned parties the night before last, Weinstein moved to bring the bill before the political leadership for approval. The bill includes several guidelines for invoking this action, such as, a prisoner may only be forced to break the hunger strike under court order and is entitled to legal representation during the process, and that only a doctor could administer the required treatment, providing it didn't conflict with his conscience.
