IDF Considering Shortening Service of Non Essential Personnel

Looking to streamline the IDF into a more cost efficient organization, Yediot Aharanot reported this morning, that a special committee was being set up to examine the possibility of mandatory service for non essential personnel  be shortened from three years to two.

The focus of this evaluation are the thousands of soldiers serving in back office and clerical positions who collect a salary, but are only scheduled for limted hours and/or days, mostly at bases such as the Kirya, Tel Hashomer, and Tzerifin. The Chief Personnel Officer told Yediot that approximately 30% of these positions could be eliminated and never missed, leaving the funds to be used more effectively, and to provide more for active combat personnel, who presently average approximately 800 shekels per month.
