Representatives of Assad and Rebels Scheduled to Meet

Representatives from both Syria's Assad regime and the rebel forces are scheduled for a face-to-face later today (Friday) making it the first meeting between the two sides in the past three years of bloodshed.

However, significant progress toward resolving the conflict is not expected at this point in time.  Syrian officials will not even entertain the idea of removing Assad from office, and are relying on Russia's backing in the matter.  On the other hand, the rebel forces are demanding that this is where the talks need to start from, which is where US interests lies.
