Al Qaeda’s leader, Ayman al-Zawahri, has called upon all Syrian rival Islamist groups to put an end to their in-fighting, and to focus battling against President Bashar Assad’s fighting forces, according to a report by the Associated Press.
Al-Zawahri’s call followed activist statements that the fighting between the Al Qaeda-linked Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant and several other Islamic militant groups has killed over 1,000 people over the past three weeks. Al-Zawahri called for a stop to the internal fighting which “has bloodied our hearts”, and for Islamist groups in Syria to set up an Islamic court to mediate their differences.
Al-Zawahri’s audio message was posted online today (Thursday). However, its authenticity could not be independently verified, although it was posted on websites that are used by the various militant groups.
