Lt. Colonel Jacob Laniado, now 81-years-old, was given a Lifetime Achievement Award for Literature for his new book Service to the People and the Homeland. It tells the story of his growing up in a hareidi family in Jerusalem who had escape from the Hevron massacre to become a decorated war hero. He joined the pre-state Jewish underground and went on to fight in the War of Independence, the Sinai Campaign, the Six Day War, the Yom Kippur War and Operation Peace for the Galilee. He also served in the Mossad. Today he lives in Kfar Adumim. President Shimon Peres wrote a personal letter of congratulations which is printed in the book.
