Amid Cvil War, Syrian President Plans for Reelection

Syrian President Bashar Assad stated on Monday, "there is a good chance that I will run in the presidential elections of Syria to be held in June." In an interview with AFP news, Assad said he was considering the move because he has "broad support among the people."

Assad assumed office in 2000, following in the footsteps of his father Hafiz Assad who was president from 1971 to 2000.

The government of Syria has been fighting against rebel forces since 2011.
