President Shim'on Peres hosted a state welcome reception and a diplomatic work meeting with Romanian President Traian Basescu, Monday morning, as part of Basescu's state visit to Israel. The two discussed progress in the peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA), the Iranian nuclear threat and the strengthening of strategic relations between Israel and Romania.
Regarding the talks with the PA, Peres said he thought it was critical that these talks bear fruit. He added that failure of the current talks would be a tragedy for the entire Middle East, explaining that a regional war could ignite overnight if they fail. Basescu expressed his support for the peace initiative of Secretary of State John Kerry of the United States and offered to do anything to help.
