Bennett Defends Chief Rabbis in Army Draft Controversy

Economics Minister Naftali Bennett (Jewish Home/ Bait Yehudi) defended the two Chief Rabbis of Israel at the Knesset on Wednesday. The Chief Rabbis opposed drafting women into the Israel Defense Forces. Bennett stated that even though he personally disagrees with their sentiment, "this is a democracy and I want the Chief Rabbis to be able express the positions they believe in. I will not let Israel to be the only country that fires a Chief Rabbi because he expressed his halakhic position," Minister Bennett stated. He added that his own wife had served in the IDF and that he personally believes that all women should either serve in the army or partake in national service.
