Israel has officially joined CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, which operates the giant particle accelerator in Geneva. An Israeli flag raising ceremony took place at the site with Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieerman and the President of the National Academy of Sciences, Prof. Ruth Arnon.
Liberman stated at the ceremony that Israel's acceptance as a full member indicates recognition of the quality of Israeli scientific research and its contribution to the welfare of mankind. Israel is the 21st state to join the organization and the only non-European country with full membership.
