The Supreme Court is scheduled to hold a hearing, Tuesday, on a petition by a number of groups calling for the immediate enlistment of hareidi-religious Jews in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF)in the wake of the High Court's striking down of the Tal Law, which used to regulate the matter. The Knesset is asking for more time to complete legislation to replace the Tal Law. The process is expected to take weeks.
Attorney Uri Regev, the chief executive officer of Hidush, one of the parties to the petition, said, "Anyone who is following the process of enacting the Equal Burden of Service Act knows that there has been no real impediment to complete it long ago. The time has come for the Supreme Court to order the stopping of the illegal allocations to the yeshiva students who are supposed to be serving in the IDF. Maybe this will result in the completion of the legislative process."
