A reporter for Army Radio, Yair Sherki, was attacked on Wednesday night by a Yassam officer during a demonstration in Jerusalem by supporters of the late Shas leader Rabbi Ovadia Yosef. Sherki was hit by the officer as he tried to interview one of the participants in the protest, who were demonstrating against the decision to close the cemetery where Rabbi Yosef is buried during the evening hours.
A union representing religious affairs correspondents said in response, “As reporters in the field we often witness police violence. There will soon be a meeting with the police and the issue will be discussed. We demand that the Israeli police prosecute the brutal cops. Freedom of the press is a fundamental principle in a democratic country and it is time the police internalize that.”
