At the request of Minister Naftali Bennett, the cabinet approved, Sunday, the a appointment of Brigadier General Hertzi Halevi as a permanent member of a committee on improvements to the Israel Defense Forces' mechanisms for investigating objectionable actions in the course of military operations. The committee was one of the recommendations of the Tuerkel Committee which investigated Israel's interception of the Turkish ship Mavi Marmara, which tried to break the Gaza naval blockade in 2010. Following an attack by terrorists on the vessel against Israeli commandos who boarded it in order to divert it, which resulted in 37 commandos and other people being wounded, nine Turkish citizens died.
Heading the committee will by Yosef Chachnover, who served on the United Nations committee which investigated the incident. Halevi was originally supposed to only deal with aspects of the committee's work that dealt directly with the IDF.
