Rescue of Passengers Stranded on Antarctica Ice Begins

Sydney Morning Herald reports passengers from the stranded Akademik Shokalskiy cried tears of joy and relief as they finally made it on to the rescue ship Aurora Australis on Thursday, nine days after becoming stranded in Antarctic ice.

About 15 of the 52 Shokalskiy passengers were helicoptered from the Russian-flagged ship to an ice floe next to the Aurora on Thursday afternoon, then lifted aboard the Australian icebreaker in a rescue boat, says Sydney Morning Herald.
