The Shas Council of Torah Sages, a body comprised of political and rabbinic leaders affiliated with the Shas party met on Wednesday to discuss several issues. It was their first meeting since the passing of the founder, Chief Rabbi Ovadia Yosef. Among the issues discussed was the drafting of yeshiva students. The council came out against conscription and called for yeshiva students to be exempt from army service. They also addressed core curriculum bills in the Knesset that seek to enforce mandatory subjects to be taught at every school in Israel. Another issue dealt with was the contested mayoral election in Beit Shemesh.
