Ashkelon Power Station Failure Causes Brief Blackouts

Brief blackouts occurred in various regions of the country on Wednesday evening due to a power failure at the Ashkelon Power Station. Electricity returned to normal in most areas and is expected to return to all customers within minutes.

The Rutenberg Power Station in Ashkelon is named after Pinhas Rutenberg, who founded the Israel Electric Corporation in 1923, originally called the Palestine Electric Company. Rutenberg was originally a Socialist in Russia but turned to Zionism in later years joining with Zev Jabotinsky and advocating and independent Jewish state in Israel.
