The Labor, Welfare and Health Committee today held a special discussion on diseases unique to firefighters, as part of the program for Firefighter Appreciation Day held in the Knesset.
Safety engineer Dr. Mark Lougassi presented to the Commission research, according to which the work accident rate of firefighters in operational activities is 43.1%, and over 90% of firefighters have symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder. 24% of operational firefighters suffer from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) (compared to an average 5% in the general population) and 67% have partial trauma compared with an average of about 45% in the general population.
Lougassi also noted that the results of cholesterol and glucose tests conducted on firefighters showed significantly higher results relative to the total population. "Firefighters are exposed to a wide range of building collapses, hazardous materials, the ravages of war and missiles, disaster arenas, traffic accidents and terrorism, natural disasters and more," he said.
