Union Leader: Lower Housing Costs by Lowering Taxes

Chairman Ofir Eini of the Histadrut Labor Federation said, Monday, that if the government really wants to bring down the price of housing, it will have to waive 10 billion shekels in taxes. Addressing the Calcalist financial publication's Tahaziot (Forecasts) conference in Tel Aviv, Eini said it costs less than half a million shekels to build an apartment measuring 100 square meters, but the price range is 1.5 to three million shekels because of a range of taxes.

Eini expressed concern over what he called an approaching wave of layoffs, based on the experience of the last few months. Noting that people snickered when he expressed the same thoughts in 2008, he said people could band together to face the prospects.
