The remaining months in Shim'on Peres's term as president will be dedicated to obtaining the release of Jonathan Pollard, according to a Friday-morning report by the Yediot Ahronot daily. Pollard is in the 29th year of a life sentence for passing classified information from the United States to Israel.
The newspaper cited private conversations in which Peres said just as sentences in Israel are reduced, it's unthinkable that Pollard should not get clemency, even if he did serious offenses. One of Peres's efforts will be to relay a letter to US President Barack Obama, signed by 106 Knesset members calling for Pollard's freedom. A copy of the letter was presented on Thursday to American ambassador Dan Shapiro.
