Numerous historic Torah scrolls were given a symbolic burial in New York ten years after they were discovered ruined in a basement in Iraq. They were found in 2003 when coalition forces led by the United States military entered the country toward the end of the reign of Saddam Hussein. The Torah scrolls were among the over 2,000 rare historic books and articles discovered in a basement that has been flooded. The burial ceremony took place last week under the auspices of members of the Iraqi Jewish community of America who successfully lobbied to obtain the scrolls from government officials. The Iraqi ambassador to the United States was one of the approximately 150 people to attended the ceremony.
