The Ministerial Committee on Legislation decided, Sunday, to establish a committee to discuss a bill that would require the agreement of both members of a couple as to which court would hear a divorce case. The committee has 45 days to return to the ministers with a proposal. Whether or not that happens, the ministers are scheduled some form of legislation.
Currently, the first party to file for divorce choses the court (rabbinic or secular family court). Member of Knesset Aliza Lavie, who sponsored the bill, said the current situation encourages divorce, whereas her proposal encourages all parties to make an attempt at reconciliation.
